Pistol caliber carbines have seen a bit of a resurgence in the last year with the introduction of CZ. Scorpion EVO, Sig MPX and new HK MP5 clones. As you might expect, there are companies looking for a way to enter the pistol caliber carbine segment through some interesting avenues. American Manufacturing Group sent us a lock, stock and barrel conversion kit for the Glock 17 to test. The concept seems a little strange, but what the hell, I'll try anything.

Before heading out to the field, I called my friend Scott to show him the new lock, stock and barrel kit. We pulled out the tired old Gen 2 Glock 17 and began the process of turning the pistol into a rifle.

After the field, remove the pistol and set aside the recoil spring and barrel as they will no longer be needed. If you put the stock on a Gen4 pistol, the recoil spring assembly is retained just by changing the barrel.

Sliding the barrel is the same as inserting a factory barrel, except you have to remove the lock nut and piston to get the barrel through the bore. As you can see in the picture below, there are three ports in the barrel to provide the necessary gases to aid the slide.

Once the barrel is in the piston/sleeve, the tapered part of the barrel slides into the slide to keep everything centered. The next step is to slide the retaining nut over the threads, tighten it to hold everything in place, then back off just enough to center the lock screw over one of the thread planes.

The kit comes with a heavier recoil spring assembly for Gen 1-3 Glock 17s; the kit came with an adapter for Gen 4 pistols, but the instructions recommend that you keep the spare unit instead.

The Joker would be proud to shoot with this guy in the Batplane. Unfortunately, during testing we found that shooting a 16-inch barrel is unreliable at best. I don't think it matters much since the kit is meant to be used as a rifle.

Attaching the stock is a simple operation, pull the latch and rotate the pin 90 degrees to pull and slide the frame plug into the axle catch hole. Then make sure the back of the frame is attached to the top and insert the pin through the rope hole. The whole process only takes a few minutes from start to finish, making it a fairly easy conversion.

It all looks a little chunky when put together, I'll happily overlook the cartoony look as long as it works properly. While doing some dry fire practice we found that changing the magazine was a bit of a pain due to the location of the button, in practice magazine changes will be easier and faster.

Shooting the Lock, Stock, and Barrel group was a little odd. While on the line, we put the kit on a Gen4 Glock 17 so I could use the magazine release with my left hand. I found this made magazine changes much easier than the Gen 2 pistol.

Other than a few minor hiccups that I ran with cheap 115-grain ammo, the lock, stock, and barrel assembly seemed reliable enough for use on the range. Based on the performance after shooting about 100 rounds of +P+ 124 hot defense ammo, I'm not sure I'd trust the conversion in a defensive situation, but I might use it as a range toy or to match up shooters. young people.

My friend Mike came out with me as he was keen to try out the kit. At about 25 yards, we found the shot to be accurate enough to be fun. We tried shooting a Glock with the barrel installed just for fun; every shot was a failure to retreat. Since it wasn't meant to be used that way, I can't be upset that it doesn't work. The same failure if you didn't have a backup firmly placed on your shoulder.

A 5-round group shot from 25 yards was fairly accurate for the kit's identification range. I was able to reliably connect with an IDPA target at 100 yards, but had no luck trying to get the group past 100 yards on the rifle range. Shooting from a distance with a pistol scope is not an easy task.

After spending some quality time on the range with the lock, stock, and pistol-to-rifle conversion kit, I can see a place for it on the range. As I mentioned before, I don't think it's reliable enough to use as a defensive tool, but shooting a cheaper 9mm during rifle practice can be really useful if you want to shoot something different or if you're working with a new weapon. a shooter who retreats or is embarrassed by the noise.

With an MSRP of $299.99, the purchase price is a bit steep, but then again, the crowd this kit appeals to is very small. If you're looking for a carbine backpack for your Glock, there aren't many options out there. You can learn more about the kit on the American Manufacturing Group website HERE.
