Touted by Glock as a pistol designed for “new shooters, sports shooters, and everyone else,” the G44 has a lot of options.

Debuted last month after a mysterious build-up, the G44 features an innovative hybrid steel-polymer slide and the ability to adapt to each user's hands with the backstraps that come with the gun. Glock's first small-caliber pistol, it is designed to emulate the crowd-favorite G19, using a 4.02-inch barrel that produces an overall length of 7.28 inches, just like the popular medium 9mm. They're also the same 5.04-inch height, meaning most G19 holsters will work for the G44, whether you want to carry the 22LR on the trail or ponderosa.

The G19, which has a 15+1 capacity and weighs 30 ounces, is that the G44 carries a smaller 10-round rimfire magazine and weighs only about half.
Glock explained that if they were going to have their name on the firing pin, they wanted it to be as reliable as possible. To some extent, this has led to the 10-round magazine, which is built where it is almost impossible for a cartridge to mis-insert.
The G44 factory 10 round single layer magazine is distinctive, with a waffle shaped spine and easy loading on the left side of the magazine body. It collects rounds properly and is comparable in capacity to 10-round magazines from the Ruger Mark IV, Browning Buckmark, and S&W SW22 Victory series.
The breakdown of the G44 is very similar to any other Glock, although the hybrid polymer/steel slide and small barrel that has a fluted chamber are a departure from the rest of the family tree.

Handling and disposal of the G44 is the same as the G19 or any Glock.
The G44 sights have a traditional polymer front post and U-notch rear, although the sights differ slightly from standard Glock factory sights due to the need to attach the ring percussion pistol to the hybrid carriage. However, Glock says both rear and front are compatible with standard sights.
The G44 shares the same features as the Glock Gen5 pistol, including a tapered charging shaft and a grooveless grip. Unlike any other Glock, this is a basic recoil action. Unlike many competing pistols, it does not have a fixed barrel.
Unlike several manufacturers who license their name to German pistol maker Umarex to make their scaled-down 22LR pistol, the G44 is made in the USA by Glock, as indicated by the numerous Georgia proof marks on its frame, slide and barrel.

The fundamental problem is that the 22LR is a funky cartridge. First marketed in 1884 as a black powder cartridge, the small lead pipsqueak was intended for use in rifles and revolvers, and its rimmed case proved notoriously difficult for pistols. In addition, there are countless loads in circulation, all with slightly different specifications and performance. When you compound these problems with the fact that cartridges are often produced by the millions as cheaply as possible, especially with high-volume cheap ammo, you get a cartridge that tends to be sensitive in many semi-autos. hand
To be clear, Glock spent nearly three years testing and developing the G44, so models like the G45, G46, G47, and G48 were released while the ring percussion chewer was still in R&D. During that time, they used no fewer than 141 different rimfire cartridges in testing, producing more than 1.2 million rounds in the process. Supporting the effort, Federal used everything from 42-grain subsonics to CCI Stingers without issue. In short, while many 22LR pistols come with the caveat that they are picky eaters, the Glock presents itself as an omnivore.

We fired 2,200 rimfire rounds from around the world in our test gun. This included Winchester's new Wildcat bulk, CCI AR Tactical, Blazer bulk, Remington Golden Bullet, Aquila Standard Super Extra (both lead and copper), several
Old yellow box CCI Mini Mags, Remington Thunderbolt and 60 grain Aquila Sniper Subsonic. We even dug out an old pack of 31 grain pest control cartridges.
That's a lot of lead, luckily 22LR prices have come down since 2013, with prices as low as $1.99 for 50 rounds.
Over 2,200 rounds of smoke and percussion dreams, based on experience with other autoloading pistols, you can expect jams or failures in all other magazines.

In our test with the Glock, we had three failures: two failures to eject an Aquila Standard Super Extra lead (in the same magazine!) and a Remington Golden Bullet that failed despite a strong impact on the lead. fringe. The gun was half cleaned to remove heavy lead and dust residue.
The G44 was super reliable in testing, recording two ejection failures and one firing, all with cheap ammo. In short, it works well when you want to and with little frustration.
With the same trigger as the G19 and functional sight radius, the G44 is easy to shoot. Stable, even at a kilogram weight, it has almost no recoil, is very consistent and hangs on target.
Although there was no Volquartsen incendiary pistol, the gun still performed well when it came to punching paper. The new Glock Striker consistently ate the center of the target at 25 yards like a carnival arcade shootout. It should be noted that the G44 uses Glock's new and highly accurate Marksman barrel, the same as the rest of the Gen5 models.
Glock 44: Why Shooters Should Be Excited About It
This target looks small at 25 yards, but even with semi-rapid fire and alternating left and right shots, center-of-mass hits were not a challenge. At the Glock launch in December, the steel targets were set at 108 yards and contact was made.
We slowed down, tried a few unsatisfying strings at 25 yards and hit about 2 inches on average. Please note that none of the ammo we use can be considered quality.
If you ran the G44 off the bench and used a good Eley Match Slow pistol or something similar, I would imagine you could probably dial it in closer.
In addition to being a fun gun that is critical to introducing new and beginning shooters to the sport, the G44 is an obvious replacement for those who might want to upgrade to the larger G19. Also, those who already own a G19 or similar could benefit from inexpensive live fire training in the G44, with the bulky .22LR only costing a quarter of the cost of even cheap 9mm ammo.

For those who want a small caliber for pest control use or to carry around the campsite or find a shed in the spring when the strings aren't active, the fact that the G44 fits standard G19 holsters and even has an accessory rail makes it an easy choice. In an emergency and with the right ammo, it could also be used as a defensive weapon, especially for someone who can't back down.
On the other hand, if you want to run a can on the G44 and enjoy peace of mind, you have to buy the threaded barrel separately and use European metric threads with a 1x28TPI adapter, even if you spring for the extra tube. The magazine capacity is also not as high as the Taurus TX22 (16+1) or the Kel-Tec CP33 (33+1), but neither are the Glocks.
The Glock G44 has an MSRP of $430, which is likely to be lower at retailers, and will be available starting January 20th. By comparison, subcaliber kit replacement parts to convert a standard Glock to .22LR start at around $300. This means that the top half of a G44 cannot simply be added to a G19 frame as it has different internals, so don't get your hopes up about that happening.
