Saar 6 Corvette - Israel's new largest and most powerful surface combatant, the Magen, entered service in late 2020, arriving at the port of Haifa in December. The first of four planned Sa'ar 6-class missile corvettes, the Magen was designed to enhance the Israel Defense Forces' coastal patrol and exclusive economic zone capabilities. The new corvettes promise to expand the overall reach of the Israeli Navy, providing maritime protection for the country's shipping lines, as well as the growing but potentially vulnerable gas production industry in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems built Magen in Germany under a contract signed in 2015 and reportedly worth €430 million for the four ships. Construction began in 2018, with €115 million in program costs paid for by the German government.

With a displacement of 1,900 tons, the 295-foot sloop has a 43-foot beam and holds approximately 70 people. The stealthy design incorporates a low radar cross section and other signature reduction measures.

Israeli Navy Receives First Saar 6 Class Corvette From Thyssenkrupp

The warships will be loaded with advanced naval weapons and sensors, the vast majority of which are of Israeli origin. The class is equipped with Vertical Launch Systems (VLS) weapons for point and area defenses to offer multi-tiered protection against incoming attacks. The Tamir surface-to-air missile helps form the naval version of the Iron Dome air defense system, called the C-Dome, which can intercept short-range missiles and sea-based missiles. The longer-range Barak-8 (sometimes referred to as Barak-2) surface-to-air missiles enable combat from a distance of more than 50 nautical miles. A single 3-inch gun will be mounted at the front and two smaller caliber remote-controlled Typhoon gun stations will be carried.

Two sets of torpedo tubes can be equipped for short-range anti-submarine warfare (ASW), and a medium hangar and flight deck are available to operate an MH-60 Seahawk-sized helicopter for airborne ASW and maritime patrols. Up to 16 anti-ship cruise missiles (reportedly either US Harpoon missiles or Israel's Gabriel missiles) will be carried on canister launchers amidships. At the heart of the warship's sensor suite is the ELM-2248 MF-STAR multifunctional active electronically scanned phased array radar, along with an advanced electronic warfare and decoy system.

The Magen propulsion system incorporates two MTU diesel engines, associated with two controlled-pitch propellers, which provide a cruising range of 2,500 nautical miles and a maximum speed of 26 knots. Three sister ships, Oz, Atzmaut and Nitzhahon, are expected to join the Israeli fleet in late 2021.

Earlier this year, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems together with the Israeli Navy and the Ministry of Defense's Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DDR&D) successfully completed a series of tests on Rafael's C-GEM naval system.

C-GEM is an innovative shipborne RF Active Decoy (RFAD) system that protects ships from anti-ship missiles by manipulating the electromagnetic spectrum. C-GEM blocks and deceives threats from multiple directions, regardless of ship maneuvers.

RAFAEL will participate in the AOC 2022 exhibition in Montpellier where the C-GEM Decoy will be shown, together with the following systems:
