Gx4 Toro Review - The new Taurus successful GX4 micro-compact 9mm pistol is finally here. The Taurus GX4 T.O.R.O (Taurus Optics Ready Option) was recently announced. It will be compatible with the most popular red dot sights on the market and offers a lot of flexibility when it comes to optical choice for budget-minded customers. If you remember, we reviewed the Taurus GX 4 when it was released earlier this year, and while Hope and I at TFBTV were very happy with the gun, we've been waiting for the release of the T.O.R.O. G3C T.O.R.O is coming soon as it works well.

The GX4 T.O.R.O primarily features an RMS cutting model optic but has a removable pin system similar to the Ruger Max-9 that allows the user to attach other optics such as the Holosun 407k or 507k without having to permanently adjust the gun. Other than the optics upgrade, the GX4 remains the same precision pistol, though Tuars ships the GX4 T.O.R.O with a single 11-round magazine as well as an extended 13-round magazine instead of the two accompanying magazines. and the standard GX4 (versions with two 10-round magazines are also available). Taurus has released what may be the most economical sub-compact 9mm pistol on the market yet. The Taurus GX4 is the company's answer to similar pistols like the SIG P365, Springfield Hellcat, and Ruger MAX-9. I was sent a Taurus GX4 pistol a little over a month prior to the online announcement and was able to put the gun through its paces, carry it, and see how much value Taurus has put into this new gun. So today I'm going to share my thoughts on the new carry and give you a good idea if this is a good option to add to your concealed carry inventory.
As far as I can tell, Taurus is trying to distance himself from some of his old habits that include shipping the gun in a cardboard box. While I don't tend to store my guns in their original cases, some people like to keep them around to organize things and transport their guns to and from the range. The GX4 comes in one of these plastic cases with two 11-round magazines, a large optional case, and a GX4 manual.
Right off the bat, I noticed that the GX4 was a whole new animal compared to earlier carry guns like the G2C and G3C. The design of the pistol is completely different compared to previous models of Taurus pistols and includes a new trigger and no manual safety, so I'm glad Taurus had the courage to do it. Like most modern pistols, the GX4 comes with a forward slide serration, and a skateboard tape-like grip texture. The gun features textured pads on each part of the frame.
A feature carried over from the G3C pistol to the GX4 is the front end of the pistol. This bevel makes returning the gun to your holster very smooth. The included sights consist of a white dot steel front sight and a black plated rear sight. I'd rather Taurus take this opportunity to either have 3-dot white sights or tritium night sights as an option, but they said the GX4 should be compatible with night sights later.

After playing with the gun for a few days before going to the range, I couldn't wait to get some rounds. In my dry fire experience, I have noticed that the new Taurus trigger for the GX4 is absolutely amazing. It's not a competition trigger by any means, but it's one of the best triggers on a subcompact pistol I've ever had. Whatever Taurus did with the GX4 trigger, they should do with a semi-auto striker fired pistol in the future.
The trigger is barely a quarter of an inch, and there is quite a bit of slippage before the trigger comes to a clean break on what is supposed to be zero. After the shot has bottomed out, the trigger reset is a hair about an eighth of an inch until you get a good tactic reset. In my testing at home, I found the trigger pull weight to be around 4lbs.
I found the texture to be right where I wanted it. It wasn't overly aggressive, but it wasn't. Carrying it in my normal belly holster didn't give any signs of skin scratching or scuffing, and the gas nitride treated slide held up well through sweat and everyday use with the belly band and LAG Tactical holster.
I gave the GX4 a mixed diet of remanufactured ammo as well as a bag of ammo from my "secret box". The mystery box is usually left over from the factory ammo boxes and some of my own reloads that don't come back to me on a regular basis. The gun runs great with all ammo and even after firing the remaining +P ammo magazines everything is working as it should. In the past I've had magazines that wouldn't fit a full magazine of Federal HST 147gr ammo, but they fit perfectly in the Mech-Gar Products 11-round GX4 magazines.
Taurus Gx4 T.o.r.o. 9mm Optics Ready Pistol: First Look
Taurus is offering some 13-round magazines starting with the GX4 and I'd like to try the series that come with the pistol. My hands aren't great but I found that my pinky held the gun in my hand. I think the 13-round magazines have some pinky extension which I think would have worked for better accuracy and tracking shots.
I am very impressed with the Taurus GX4. Taurus is proving here that just because a gun is cheap doesn't need to be.
Everything from the new magazines to the highly improved new trigger is a huge plus in my book to this particular type of gun. Two things I'd like to see added that aren't available from the factory are the night vision options, optical cutouts (which I think will come together within a couple of months of the original release), and the inclusion of two additional rails. .
Not everyone uses these items, but many of us do and I know a good number who put lights and optics on all the guns they own. Overall, I think the Taurus GX4 is a great addition to the 9mm sub-compact market and is by far the most affordable pistol on the list if you don't need the extra features I mentioned above. Overall, the Taurus GX4 should make a great concealment gun for anyone looking for a concealable and capable handgun with a healthy supply of ammo without breaking the bank.
