Swedish manufacturer Saab has signed a multi-year $87 million contract with the military to supply soldiers with new and improved M3E1 Carl Gustaf 85mm recoilless rifles over the coming years, the company announced Thursday.

Greece Examines At4, Carl Gustaf M4 And Nlaw Anti Tank Weapons

The Army approved the most recent update in 2017 after announcing that each platoon would receive a Carl Gustaf for use in combat. The new version has a titanium casing and weighs 14.8 pounds, which apparently makes it 28% lighter and much more ergonomic than its M3 and M3A1 predecessors.

“The current system used by the military is the AT4, which allows the soldier to fire just one shot and then throw the system away,” said the military in 2017. “With the M3E1, soldiers can use different types of ammunition that give them them greater capability on the battlefield.

The M3E1 "provides modern battlefield readiness with multi-role capabilities through a wide range of munitions including counter-roll, anti-structure and anti-armor", said Saab CEO, American Erik Smith, in a press release.

Since the announcement of the official return of the Carl Gustaf, the military has made efforts to upgrade its current arsenal of M3 recoilless rifles with the M3A1 Saab variant, first unveiled in 2014.

The Army has allocated more than $17 million to support the procurement of 214 M3E1 Recoilless Rifles in its fiscal 2021 budget request. It requested 227 and 300 M3A1 systems in 2020 and 2019, respectively.

The M331 is capable of "combating, neutralizing, and destroying light armored vehicles, soft-coated vehicles, open field or parade personnel, and field fortifications in open urban and rural operating environments," according to Army budget documents.

While the 2017 requirements called for the Army to use only 1,111 new and improved M3E1 Carl Gustaf recoilless rifles, the Army's budget documents indicate a procurement target of approximately 2,460 total boomsticks by '2023.

New, lighter launchers aren't the only upgrade coming sooner or later to service members: Saab recently partnered with Raytheon for a series of guided flight tests for its new laser-guided munition, aptly named guided Carl-Gustaf.

PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. (January 24, 2012) -- With the need for soldiers in Afghanistan to engage the enemy at greater distances, Picatinny Arsenal has completed initial training and fielded a weapon for traditional units previously used only by special operations commands.

The Multirole Anti-Armor Anti-Personnel Weapon System, or MAAWS, also known as the M3 Carl Gustaf, has been part of the United States Special Operations Command inventory since 1991.

However, the unique capabilities of the system and its munitions led to an advanced operational assessment, known as FOA.

The MAAWS has similarities to the AT4 shoulder anti-tank system. But MAAWS is unique because the system itself is not disposable, meaning it can be used more than once.

“It works like a rifle,” said Bhuvanesh Thoguluva, head of the vehicle, rocket and shoulder weapons protection department at the Technical Directorate and Ammunition Systems. The board is part of the Picatinny Weapons Research, Development and Engineering Center.

“After the shot, the assistant gunner reloads it and it can fire again,” explained Thoguluva. On a expendable weapon, you'll find a maximum effective range of around 300 yards, while with the Gustaf you can reach 1700 yards. It's a huge difference."

An operational requirement for the MAAWS system emerged in May when troops reported having difficulty reaching the enemy at these distances.

The purpose of the MAAWS is to engage light armored targets at ranges up to 700 meters and light targets at ranges up to 1000 meters.

Previously only used by Special Operations Commands, starting with Rangers in 1989, Navy SEALS in 1997, and later the rest of US Special Operations Forces, the need for the system became more evident among traditional units.

Saab's New Weapon Can Communicate With Its Ammo

“This commissioning really could not have happened without the help of SOCOM (Special Operations Command),” said Thoguluva.

The US Special Operations Command authorized the transfer of these systems and their munitions to the field.

Quantities for this initial field were 58 Carl Gustaf rifles and 1,500 rounds of high-explosive and dual-purpose high-explosive ammunition. In addition, 114 soldiers and 21 gunsmith maintainers were trained in its use.

While there are eight varieties of combat rounds and two training rounds for the system, the high-explosive and high-explosive dual-purpose rounds are the only two included in the classification.

Other cartridges can provide users with heat, lighting, anti-structure, multi-target, and smoke capabilities. As the need for additional resources grows with users, more cartridges can be sent to troops in the future.

The pistol is breech loaded and can be fired standing, kneeling, sitting or lying down. A built-in detachable bipod helps the shooter lift the weapon off the ground while shooting from a prone position.

The propellant escapes through the rear of the weapon, which equalizes the recoil force. In the AT4-CS type system, a saltwater solution is ejected rather than exhausted, which is one of the reasons why the AT4-CS does not have the range of the MAAWS.

"It's a balancing act," he added. "When you fire a 7.62, there's no escapement, so the shooter's shoulder gets most of the recoil." This balancing act puts less stress on the shooter.

The current MAAWS system weighs approximately 22 pounds with each round of ammunition weighing less than 10 pounds. Material developers are working to lighten the rifle's load by five to six pounds.

The blast radius of a high-explosive projectile is between 50 and 75 meters. The user sets the shot distance on the MAAWS simply by turning a counter labeled on top of the cartridge.

The high-explosive dual-purpose round can detonate in two ways: upon impact with the intended target or in a delay mode where it will penetrate a target and detonate at a predetermined time.

"It's safe to say he does his job. I can't say much more than that," said Thoguluva.

The current camp is used by soldiers from the 3rd and 25th Infantry Divisions, as well as the 10th Mountain Division. Representatives of the Testing and Evaluation Center FOA team conducted evaluations of the training event. FOA will evaluate initial combat use after 30 days.

The Carl Gustaf takes its name from the Swedish weapons production factory known as the Carl Gustafs Stads Gevärsfaktori ("Carl Gustaf Town Rifle Factory"). The city name of Carl Gustaf was an intermittently used name for the city of Eskilstuna after King Karl X Gustav gave the city privileges. The gun was first introduced into Swedish service in 1948. Two (gunner and loader), but can be used by a single operator with a reduced rate of fire.

The Carl Gustaf 8.4 cm recoilless rifle (Swedish pronunciation: [kɑːɭ ˈɡɵ̂sːtav], named after Carl Gustafs Stads Gevärsfaktori who originally produced it) is a portable recoilless rifle in the 84 mm (3.3 in) caliber to Royal Swedish Army Materiel Administration in the second half of the 1940s as a highly successful short range anti-tank weapon and infantry support weapon for export around the world and today is a popular general purpose support weapon used by many nations. The Carl Gustaf 84mm Recoilless Rifle is an inexpensive, lightweight weapon that uses a wide range of ammunition, making it extremely flexible and suitable for a wide variety of roles.

Initial model development began in 1946 as one of many recoilless rifle designs of that era, building on the experience of the earlier Carl Gustaf 20mm recoilless rifle and the success of man-portable rocket launchers during World War II.
